Mission 

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the accounting operations of the TFL organization, the preparation of periodic financial reports and related budgets, and the ongoing development and maintenance of an adequate system of accounting procedures and internal controls that are designed to mitigate risks and ensure the accuracy of TFL’s reported financial results.  This position is essential to the execution of the ministry for Truth For Life.

Position Overview

Responsibilities: The Accounting Manager has the primary responsibility for TFL’s accounting and related systems. These accounting functions include (1) all aspects of internal and external financial and tax reporting in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); (2) the maintenance of accounting systems based on a comprehensive set of accounting procedures and internal controls; and (3) coordination of the budgeting process designed to both mitigate risk and ensure the accuracy of TFL’s reported financial results.

Qualifications: The Accounting Manager should have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration with a minimum of 10+ years of progressively responsible experience with significant companies and/or non-profit organizations. It is preferred that the Accounting Manager is a CPA with some public accounting and auditing experience. 

Organizational Structure: Reports to the CFO; supports the COO and Director of Operations & HR; supervises accounting staff including contracted part-time staff; collaborates cross-functionally with other managers having specific departmental responsibilities including station relations, marketing, IT, digital, customer service, content and facilities. 

Working Conditions: Standard 40-hour workweek. Annually, 10 holidays, 2 vacation weeks (3 after 5 years of service) and up to 80 hours sick time that accumulates up to 13 weeks if unused. Primarily in an office environment with an ability to work virtually. If circumstances require, will be expected to travel or work on a weekend or an evening if necessary.

Principal Responsibilities

Accounting Functions:

Management:

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department; develop an organizational structure designed to achieve the department's goals and objectives
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and internal control procedures
  • Manage outsourced functions (example- Avalara sales tax reporting system) 

Financial/Tax/Other Reporting:

  • Issue timely and complete monthly internal and annual external financial statements prepared on a GAAP basis
  • Coordinate the annual audit with the external auditors
  • Collaborate on the preparation of the corporate annual report
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and related tax filings
  • Handle annual state registrations as required and submissions to charitable rating organizations

Budgeting:

  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts in conjunction with department Directors
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide underlying financial analyses and related research that enable sound ministry financial decision-making
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives
  • Recommend performance benchmarks and calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Develop a system of management cost reports

 

Transaction Processing:

  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Ensure that payroll related accounting is handled in a timely manner
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing and record retention systems

Other Functions:

  • Handle the administration, extension and maintenance of accounting related software (i.e. QuickBooks)
  • Evaluate, assess and implement new methods to improve accounting processes and related systems
  • Oversee the daily cash management process and related policies
  • Participate in organizational risk management evaluation and mitigation initiatives
  • Provide financial information and related analyses as needed for Finance Committee and TFL Board meetings
  • Provide financial analyses related to capital projects and related planning  
  • Collaborate with those responsible for human resources and payroll functions (Director of Operations & HR; CFO)
  • Collaborate with others cross-functionally whose processes and procedures interface with the accounting department
